Christchurch Earthquake - Addington
Christchurch, New Zealand, experienced three large earthquakes on 4 September 2010, 22 February 2011, 13 June 2011. These killed a large number of people and wreaked a huge amount of damage to the city’s heritage buildings, all of which has been widely covered by the news media.

What has not been widely covered by anyone is the widespread damage to the city’s historic cemeteries. The two latest quakes generated large upward movement and large lateral movement, both of which contributed to the leaping and toppling of obelisks and grave markers. Sadly these breakages may never be repaired as the cost would be huge and rebuilding monies are flowing naturally into humanitarian needs of the people affected.

We are indebted to Don Hutton of Christchurch for the following pictorial record of the tragedy.
